Client Background

St Joseph’s RCVA Primary School provides Catholic education, promoting the development of each child through a stimulating environment and a broad and balanced curriculum. It is one of 31 schools across the North East to be rebuilt through the £4.4 billion priority school building programme (PSBP).

The Challenge

At St Joseph’s the old school building was completely replaced by a newly constructed single storey school building, which required full networking and infrastructure.

UCS was responsible for the delivery of a complete ICT infrastructure throughout the new school building. It was essential to create good infrastructure that would meet students’ learning needs and last for many years.

What UCS Did

We consulted with several parties to ensure we got the best solutions that would work for the school and its pupils now and into the future. Understanding the school’s ICT requirements involved several meetings between representatives of the school, local council, EFA and construction contractors. We also had to fully understand how the school used ICT from a teaching and learning perspective and how improvements could be realised for the new building.

It was critical to ensure a seamless transition as the school moved into its new building.

The Technical Solution

The solution deployed includes a leading edge passive cabling and active equipment infrastructure installed throughout the new school building. Category 6 UTP cabling was installed throughout the new building to service low level outlets for PCs, printers and IP telephones and high level outlets for wifi access points and projectors. These outlets were coupled with an active equipment LAN switching solution from Hewlett Packard. Pervasive internal and external teaching area wireless LAN coverage was provided by an Aerohive wifi solution. A Mitel IP telephony solution was deployed within office areas to desk handsets and with wifi handset for roaming capability.

Key Features

  • Category 6 UTP outlets
  • 80Gbps inter-switch backbone
  • 1Gbps to the desk
  • 802.11ac Wave 2 wifi
  • Cabled and wireless IP Telephony
  • UPS protection for switches & servers

The Outcome

The school’s staff and pupils now enjoy a reliable and secure network operating that operates at peak performance. There is high performance wired and wireless infrastructure that is scalable should the school expand. If needs ever change, the solutions implemented are future-proofed and would require minimal effort to adapt.

High definition projectors and interactive screens were installed to give a high performance, multi-gigabit network that supports the ability to play multi-media content throughout the school.

Pervasive gigabit+ wifi allows staff and pupils to access demanding content wirelessly via tablet or other mobile devices. This wireless coverage is available in open access spaces, allowing anytime, anywhere learning and access to technology.
