Client Background

PD Ports Teesside is one of the main logistical hubs for the importing & exporting of goods in the north-east of England and one of the largest in the country. The site expands across it’s two main sites at Teesport & Hartlepool and locally supported by further sites in Middlesbrough and the logistical centre in Billingham. PD Ports is also one of the region’s largest employers. Operating a modern-day logistical centre requires it’s communication network to be at the forefront of technology. No longer are the days that a computer network is used for firing up your laptop and sending an email to your accounts department. The IT infrastructure is fundamental to managing your security systems, tracking movements of equipment, alerting your team of stock levels. Managing the development of buildings and their usage as well planning of the site relies on keeping the IT systems working 24/7.

The Challenge

On one project UCS Technologies were asked to design and implement a new and robust site wide fibre network to cater for today’s need and future requirements of the site, while at the same time keeping the existing live which carried business critical services. The design challenges faced included; utilising the existing duct system that held the existing services and providing a new network with added resilience. Keeping a network live, while ensuring the key services of the port where not put at risk was also a key factor for consideration.

What UCS Technologies Did

Over the past three years UCS Technologies have methodically worked alongside PD Ports their other infrastructure partner Pulsant to improve the integrity of the communications network. Upgrading all fibre links to Steel Wired Armoured outer sheath and mitigating the environmental hazards you find on a shipping port. Our CMPT project management team worked closely with the main stake holders ensuring the new infrastructure was deployed while keeping all existing services live through each stage of the transition to the new network. UCS Technologies aided PD Ports Partner, Pulsant, in installing new point to point links from mast towers on the PD ports estate. This involved working in difficult environments at high level using specialist access towers and at close proximity to port edge, while mounting and fitting the Point to Point transmitters.
