Passive Optical Networks: The future of networking?

5th February 2020

Passive Optical Networks (PONs) are taking the tech industry by storm. It’s no surprise as PONs consume less power than current networks which have an average consumption rate of 40%.

A typical PON delivers data via a single transmission to multiple endpoints. Due to the scalable ability of these networks a fibre can be split and service up to 128 ports. PONs were designed for use in residential and enterprise environments.  Although, it is expected that as the usage of this network infrastructure rises its uses in different environments will too.

Some key features of PONs include:

  • High speed
  • Long life
  • Low cost
  • Scalable
  • Future proof and upgradable
  • Reduction in power usage
  • Reduction in cooling requirements

Recently, Director of UCS Technologies Paul Kidd, attended a meeting in EXCEL head offices to learn more about the fundamentals of PON solutions. When queried about how he would sum up a PON he stated: "From a physical perspective, fibre links form the main infrastructure with effectively mini switches servicing local areas".

It will be interesting to see new uptakes of PON networks and how the technology develops over the coming years.
